Setting up your hydroponic tower is straightforward. This guide walks you through assembling your tower, preparing the reservoir, and getting your first plants in.
Your tower needs a level surface, access to an electrical outlet for the pump, and ideally 6+ hours of direct sunlight if growing outdoors. Indoors, a south-facing window or a grow light will work. Avoid placing the tower where it could be knocked over — once it is full of water and plants, it is top-heavy.
Stack the tower sections on the base, making sure each section is seated securely. Insert the central irrigation tube and connect it to the pump in the reservoir below. Place the pump in the reservoir and route the tubing up through the center of the tower. Do a dry test — plug in the pump and make sure water flows from the top and drains back down through each section into the reservoir.
Fill the reservoir with water. Mix in your hydroponic nutrients according to the included instructions (see our Nutrient Basics guide for more detail). Check the pH — you want it between 5.5 and 6.5. Adjust with pH up or pH down solution as needed. Run the pump for a few minutes to circulate and mix everything evenly.
Place seedlings (in net cups with growing medium) into each tower pocket. If you bought seedlings from us, they are already in the right size net cup — just drop them in. Set your timer to run the pump for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off during daylight hours. Some growers run continuously; either approach works, but cycling extends pump life.
Check your water level every few days and top off as needed. Check pH and EC weekly (see our Nutrient Basics guide). Your first harvest should be ready in 3–5 weeks depending on what you planted. Lettuce and herbs grow fastest; strawberries take a bit longer but are worth the wait.
